A reactive glaze over stoneware, in deep blue. The kiln finishes the band where the colours meet, so this piece carries the same glaze as the one photographed and a pattern of its own.

What the glaze does

Reactive glaze carries mineral oxides that travel while the piece fires. Thickness, kiln position and the shape underneath all pull the boundary between the colours around, so speckles land differently and a fade can sit higher or lower on the next piece.

Nice bowls

Very nice bowls. Good size. I ordered two sets and may order another set. Two of two bowls had defects. I have requested replacements. Hopefully, customer service will come through.

Wonderful Dishes That We'll Keep Adding To

My family really loves these bowls. They are a great size for anything you might want to use them for. They're thick and sturdy, food rinses off easily, and spoons don't leave marks on them. We wanted dishes that are lead and cadmium free, which these are. We also really love the colors. In fact, we're so happy with these bowls that we got rid of all of our other dishes, bought four more bowls and a set of eight plates. It feels like a breath of fresh air.

Beautiful and good quality

Gorgeous! I recently bought ceramic mugs from an artist and I wanted some other pieces that would go with them - these are perfect. Love them. They’re great quality and just beautiful.

Very, very pretty and a perfect size for me

❤️❤️❤️ these! I make homemade soup a lot and these are perfect for serving to my friends and myself. The design is awesome and they are so pretty. I love that they’re not too big and I like the depth. They are easy to hold in my hand when I’m sitting in my recliner. I would highly recommend these and they would make a great gift also.

Perfect Purchase

These bowls are really beautiful! I bought them for oatmeal and soup and they're sized just right for my needs. They arrived in perfect condition. Yes, they were pricey for oatmeal and soup bowls, but well worth it.

Good quality reasonable price

Much prettier than we expected these bowls to be. We ordered a set of 4 blue and 4 teal. After months of use, in the microwave and in the dishwasher, the shine still holds up. No scratches or dings.

Nailed it.

Wonderful 🤩. I ordered the beige super white cream (yellow streak) with the blacks specs in it and—it didn’t work. These are spot on with the cream, tan, white, tinge of grey tint on brown that I was going for. Trying to match “off white” discontinued set was a nightmare before I found these. It has the bit of light cream (off white) that I needed to tie my existing set together. I’m happy. I took several pictures to show you the difference between off white, super white, and these. Glad I gambled. Thanks

What you are holding

The same eight things are true of every piece we make.

Fired hard

Stoneware fires dense, so it holds heat and shrugs off the knock against a tap.

Glaze that moves

Mineral oxides travel in the heat, so the firing draws the line between colours.

Handles for full mugs

A large mug carries a handle you can put a whole hand through.

Made to stack

Wide feet and even rims, so a shelf of them sits flat.

A Bosmarlin mug in a reactive glaze

Dishwasher and microwave

Stated on nearly every piece in the range, and true of the glaze rather than a hope.

No two alike

Speckles land differently and a fade can sit higher or lower on the next piece.

Lead-free and cadmium-free

As stated on the range. The care page spells out what that means.

Sized for real drinks

From 8.5 oz for a cappuccino to 50 oz for a mug of soup.

Stoneware, porcelain and earthenware

Three words used loosely on the same shelf. They describe how hot the clay was fired and how much water it will still absorb, and that difference decides how a piece behaves in a dishwasher, in a microwave and against the edge of a sink.

Stoneware, what we make

  • Fired hot and dense, so it absorbs almost no water
  • Heavy in the hand and stable on a desk
  • Chips are rare, and a chip does not soak up coffee
  • Holds heat noticeably longer than a thin cup

Porcelain

  • Fired hot too, but thrown thin and light
  • Elegant, and far easier to chip on a tap
  • Cools faster because there is less body to hold heat
  • Usually sold as a full service rather than by the piece

Earthenware

  • Fired lower, so the body stays porous
  • Depends entirely on its glaze to hold liquid
  • A crazed or chipped glaze lets the body absorb
  • Lighter and cheaper, and shorter lived in daily use

The three words describe firing temperature and how much water the fired body still takes up. Everything else follows from that.
