What the glaze does

Reactive glaze carries mineral oxides that travel while the piece fires. Thickness, kiln position and the shape underneath all pull the boundary between the colours around, so speckles land differently and a fade can sit higher or lower on the next piece.

Good and not so good

I was super excited about these. When I received them, 3 out of 4 were very nice. The color is beautiful and I expected to use them for years into the future. The packaging was excellent. One plate had an area/raised spot, unglazed in the bottom of it, so I sent it back. I received a new box (very fast) with a replacement, so customer svc was excellent. But they sent 4 new plates which I didn't expect-and 2 out of the 4 ALSO had unglazed defects in the bottom of the plates. I was happy to now have a complete set. I think quality control needs to catch these defects before shipping or double check the glazing before firing them in the kiln.

These pasta plates should have five stars!!!

Highly recommend! I absolutely LOVE these pasta plates!!! And yes, I said plates! Stop looking for a new set of plates and buy them. I'm not sure why they're calling this a bowl, but it is really just a deep plate and that is what we use them for. We bought a set of these with a set of matching bowls just before the holidays. They function so much better than the average bowl or plate! These have been lifestyle changing for our whole family! They're great for pasta and salad, sure, but so much more than that! Asian food, Tacos, mashed potatoes and gravy, cake & ice cream, and even steaks are going to stay on your plate and not stain your clothes, tablecloth, carpet or furniture! Not only are they dishwasher and microwave safe, but everyone who comes over is amazed by them. We used them for Christmas dinner and everyone was raving about them! My sister and my bestie both bought their own sets after eating with them. I didn't expect anything like this when I bought them, but they are the most versatile, time-saving, dishes I've ever owned. They are also reasonably priced, very well-made, durable and beautiful!

Great, stylish quality dishware

I love these dishes/bowls! They’re so versatile and I find myself reaching for them in place of my regular, much more expensive dinner plates time and again. Great quality and hold up fantastic thru many dishwasher cycles.

Great bowls

These pasta bowls are just what I was looking for. They finish on them is really nice is I really like the way the paint looks like it drips over the outside edge of the bowls. The majority of the outside portion isn't painted so it doesn't get slippery when you are holding them if there's any moisture on it. Bowls are large enough for the heftiest pasta lover. We've only used them with fresh homemade pasta and salads, so I'm not sure about the claim that they are microwave safe. It says they are, but I don't know if they get super hot after being in the microwave. They are fine being run through the dishwasher. Ours have been put in it several times and there's no evidence of damage from being in the heavy pot/pan cycle. Would definitely recommend these.

Beautiful pasta bowls. Even better customer service. One bowl arrived chipped. I immediately contacted customer support and they responded kindly and quickly and went above and beyond by sending me an entire new set. The care made me appreciate these bowls even more. Would definitely recommend and order again :0)))

Sturdy, well glazed

The bowls seem well made. The glaze also seems good, time will tell. The size and hefty are very appropriate for this category of dinnerware. We definitely like the ability to used in a microwave and wash in out dishwasher.

What you are holding

The same eight things are true of every piece we make.

Fired hard

Stoneware fires dense, so it holds heat and shrugs off the knock against a tap.

Glaze that moves

Mineral oxides travel in the heat, so the firing draws the line between colours.

Handles for full mugs

A large mug carries a handle you can put a whole hand through.

Made to stack

Wide feet and even rims, so a shelf of them sits flat.

A Bosmarlin mug in a reactive glaze

Dishwasher and microwave

Stated on nearly every piece in the range, and true of the glaze rather than a hope.

No two alike

Speckles land differently and a fade can sit higher or lower on the next piece.

Lead-free and cadmium-free

As stated on the range. The care page spells out what that means.

Sized for real drinks

From 8.5 oz for a cappuccino to 50 oz for a mug of soup.

Stoneware, porcelain and earthenware

Three words used loosely on the same shelf. They describe how hot the clay was fired and how much water it will still absorb, and that difference decides how a piece behaves in a dishwasher, in a microwave and against the edge of a sink.

Stoneware, what we make

  • Fired hot and dense, so it absorbs almost no water
  • Heavy in the hand and stable on a desk
  • Chips are rare, and a chip does not soak up coffee
  • Holds heat noticeably longer than a thin cup

Porcelain

  • Fired hot too, but thrown thin and light
  • Elegant, and far easier to chip on a tap
  • Cools faster because there is less body to hold heat
  • Usually sold as a full service rather than by the piece

Earthenware

  • Fired lower, so the body stays porous
  • Depends entirely on its glaze to hold liquid
  • A crazed or chipped glaze lets the body absorb
  • Lighter and cheaper, and shorter lived in daily use

The three words describe firing temperature and how much water the fired body still takes up. Everything else follows from that.
